Get Food
If you are in need of food for yourself and/or your family, please call 416-203-0050 and Daily Bread will refer you to a neighbourhood food bank in your area. Be sure to read on to learn what you need to do once you have the location of your local food bank and its operating hours.
What to expect when visiting a food bank
The majority of our member food banks are located in local churches and community centres. They are run by dedicated staff and volunteers who pick up food, stock shelves and support clients by distributing food.
We recognize that if you are accessing a food bank, you are likely experiencing challenges in your life and we encourage all of our member food banks to create an empowering environment for those who access food. In order to make your experience positive, Daily Bread's member agencies' staff and volunteers create an environment of mutual respect and caring for all food bank clients.
What you need to bringWhen you visit a food bank, you will be asked for information about your income, your address and your expenditures. It is important to bring the following:
- Identification for all family members
- Proof of income and expenditures (rent, hydro, basic phone)
- Proof of your current address
Financial eligibility
When accessing a food bank at one of Daily Bread's member agencies, you will undergo an income assessment interview. This assessment helps us determine how many times per month you can access the food bank and ensures that food is fairly distributed among those who need it. It also allows us to find out what issues are bringing you to a food bank and allows us to see if there are resources we can provide to improve your situation.
What you will get
Food banks provide a 2-3 day supply of food, based on the number of people in your family. We try to offer choice in the food that is provided, based on Canada's Food Guide. Please keep in mind that your choice of food depends on what is available.
